Nebraska has achieved a position among the College football elite, claiming five national championships, 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997. Nebraska began football in 1890 as an independent, and joined the Missouri Valley Conference in 1907. Then they entered the Big Six Conference as a charter member in 1927, which then became the Big Seven, Big Eight, and the Big Twelve Conference, in 1995. The Cornhuskers claimed 43 conference titles through 2004.

Through 2004:

Husker coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame, include Dana X. Bible, Biff Jones, Bob Devaney, and the venerable Tom Osborne.

Nebraska players have won one Butkus, one Maxwell, four Lombardis, eight Outlands, three Heismans, one O’Brien, one Remington, and three Walter Camps.

Past Husker heroes include: George Sauer, Bobby Reynolds, Wayne Meylan, Trev Alberts, Mike Rozier, Rich Glover, Dave Remington, Dean Steinkuhler, Grant Wistrom, Larry Jacobson, Will Shields, Zack Weigert, Aaron Taylor, Johnny Rodgers, and Eric Crouch.
