”The Gators
added two field goals in the third quarter, by junior Chris Hetland.
The first
a 38 yarder following a fumble recovery by junior Tremaine McCollum,
and a
second one from 35 yards out, 13-7 Florida. At the end of the third
quarter,
the crowd all stood, joined arms and swayed as one to "We Are The Boys":
“We are the boys from old
Florida, F-L-O-R-I-D-A…
Where
the girls are the fairest, the boys are the squarest
of any
old state down our way…
We are
all strong for old Florida,
down
where the old Gators play…
In all
kinds of weather,
We’ll
all
stick togetherrrrr…for F-L-O-R-I-D-A
It seems to
come out of nowhere. No announcement over the PA system, no prompting
or
directions from anywhere. It goes
without saying - a product of countless repetitions over the years.
When the
clock hits 00:00 at he end of the third
quarter, it’s automatic. Everyone
stands, locking arms with their neighbors, as the band begins. Then the Gator Faithful, 88,548 strong –
minus the fans of the visiting team – sway and sing
together, signaling the
start of the fourth quarter - which hopefully will bring another Gator
victory.
The singing
of “We Are The Boys From Old Florida” - a song dating back to World War
II - at
the beginning of the fourth quarter, is a time-honored ritual, sacred
to Gator
fans. It is performed at road games as well as in the friendly confines
of The
Swamp, and gameday at Florida wouldn’t be complete
without it.
